Total staircase

Back in the stairwell, a series of paintings and watercolours on Eberbach and its surroundings follow on the walls of the ascending staircase. They are by artists who were born in Eberbach, stayed temporarily in the area or lived here.

Morning Star

Friedrich Ernst Morgenstern (1853 - 1919) from Frankfurt painted in Eberbach in 1917. 14 oil paintings are known. The small-format painting shows the caulking of a ship in the Seibert shipyard in the Keitländer. Kalfatern meant sealing the joints of wooden ships with tow, moss, tar or putty. The Keitländer was an area on the Neckar meadows on the right bank of the river, east of Eberbach, towards Zwingenberg. The view goes over the docked ship and the barge pulled ashore across the expanse of water where the mountains border the river. On the left, you can see a piece of the old towpath with an anchor lying on it. Further up the river, a man is rowing in a flat-bottomed yacht. Although Morgenstern painted his picture with brisk brushstrokes, you can make out the shadow of the yacht in the water. The light of the morning sun is also reflected. The picture radiates calm despite the two people at work. You can find out more about the construction of wooden ships in Eberbach in the rooms on shipping.
