Museum of the City of Eberbach

Permanent Exhibition

Station 33

Dr John Gustav Weiss

The landing is used to honour the founder of the city history collection: Dr. John Gustav Weiss, who was mayor of Eberbach for 34 years from 1893 to 1927. He had the town's very first museum established, which was once housed in Thalheim's house. From 1908 he had the ruins of the castle excavated and the foundations restored. He wrote a history of the town (published in 1900 and again in 1927). He was the founder and long-time editor of the Eberbacher Geschichtsblatt, which was first published in 1901 and has reported annually on historical and contemporary events in the town ever since.

The showcase presents the two editions of his city history, his memoirs, which appeared in print in 1981, and volumes of poetry that he dedicated to his wife. Between 1883 and 1942, the year of her death, he wrote one volume a year, each of which he also furnished with drawings in his own hand. A photo of the portrait painted by Erwin Emerich in 1927 shows this important personality for the history of the city. The original painting hangs in the new town hall.
