Up the staircase are old photos of the work in the quarries and the transport of the heavy blocks.
In Eberbach, the finished stone blocks were brought by horse-drawn carts and later by lorries to the Lauer on the river for shipment or, after the construction of the railway, also to the railway station, where they were loaded. The particularly hard Eberbach red sandstone was used to make grinding and polishing stones, acid troughs for the chemical industry and, of course, stones for tunnels, bridges, railway installations, or for the construction of ship berths, houses and churches.
By the way, there is a walking trail, the "Route of the Sandstone Quarries", which leads from Pleutersbach towards Hirschhorn along the river. It is worthwhile if you want to learn more about the quarries and their history. An information sheet is available in the entrance area of the museum.
In addition, the brochure "The Stonecutters' Monument" gives a lot of interesting information on the history of the quarries....
